Re-reading Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter 9, Tyrion
Summary
Again we skip four days. Tyrion finishes his reading of Winterfell books early in the morning. He meets Joffrey and his Hound on the courtyard. Tyrion insists that Joffrey offers his condolences to the grieving Starks. Imp hits the boy twice showing no fear of his mother or guardian.

Tyrion joins the Queen and Jaime breaking fast. He tells them that Maester believes Bran will not die. Queen and her brother are not pleased with that.

“You tell your mother,” Tyrion told him. “But first you get yourself to Lord and Lady Stark, and you fall to your knees in front of them, and you tell them how very sorry you are, and that you are at their service if there is the slightest thing you can do for them or theirs in this desperate hour, and that all your prayers go with them.”

“I hope the boy does wake. I would be most interested to hear what he might have to say.”
His brother’s smile curdled like sour milk. “Tyrion, my sweet brother,” he said darkly, “there are times when you give me cause to wonder whose side you are on.”

Commentary

Very interesting chapter. This is where the “game” begins, from now on it’s hard to follow who knows what, who’s telling the truth and who’s on which side. It’s clear that there is little love between Tyrion and Joffrey. The interesting bit though is the conversation Imp has with Jaime. It seems almost like Tyrion already knew that Jaime was involved in the “accident” and was letting his brother know about this.

Tyrion is one of my favorite characters, just because it’s so hard to put him on the moral compass. He’s playing along with Jaime, which would put him on the evil side, but the compassion he’s showing for Bran makes up for it.
